Psalm 26: What David's Prayer Teaches Us About Daily Faith

Posted by Ron S

My wife and I are currently reading through the Bible chronologically together, and we recently came to Psalm 26. God immediately began speaking to me through it.

David opens with a bold prayer: "Vindicate me, Lord, for I have led a blameless life; I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered. Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind." - Psalm 26:1-2
We see that David was asking God to look closely. To examine. To correct where needed.

It got me thinking about my own walk.

I've been a follower of Christ for years. I've led worship, done one-on-ones, small groups, outreaches… my wife and I gave 25 years to YWAM New York. Looking back, I can see the commitment I made to Him.

But recently God has been asking me a different question. Not "Are you committed?" but rather "How are you living it out daily?" What am I watching? The reels, the shows, the YouTube rabbit holes… is there a self-examination happening there? Where does God actually fall on my priority list throughout the day? Who am I spending my time with, and is that intentional?

These aren't condemnation questions. They're invitation questions, the same kind David was praying in Psalm 26:

"I do not sit with the deceitful, nor do I associate with hypocrites." - Psalm 26:4

David wasn't just believing the right things. He was making daily decisions that reflected his relationship with God.

I'm not suggesting we live in constant self-examination, as that would be exhausting and counterproductive. But there's a difference between that and blindly drifting through life without ever inviting God to speak into the details. He wants to guide us. He wants to direct our steps. But that requires us to pause and ask.

And then there's the outward question: Am I reaching people for Jesus? Because self-assessment isn't just about personal holiness. It's about understanding what He has called us to, as Christians. The world desperately needs the light of Christ, and God has called each of us to be that light.

My prayer today, and maybe yours too, is simple: "Search me, God. Show me where to go deeper. And use me to reach this world for You. Bring divine appointments, in Jesus name."
